What’s Your Temperament (and why does it matter)?

May 7 @ 6:00 pm

You probably know that orchestras tune to A=440 Hz, and that pianos are tuned in equal temperament. Did you know, though, that not too long ago there were many different standards for the pitch of A? And that equal temperament was not commonly used until 1917? Join Eric Wicks, organ and harpsichord specialist, for an engaging look at the ways in which we tune keyboard instruments. Through demonstrations and clear explanations, we’ll start with physics: why can’t we just tune pure fifths, anyway? Along the way, we’ll explore the origins of temperaments, how they developed, and how we may use this information in our early music performances. After watching this presentation, you’ll have an appreciation of the way temperament partners with harmony to make music more beautiful!
