Ugochukwu-Smooth C. Nzewi is an artist, art historian, and was recently appointed Steven and Lisa Tananbaum Curator in the department of painting and sculpture at the newly reimagined Museum of Modern Art in New York, NY. In this keynote lecture, Nzewi will discuss his perspectives on telling an expansive and more inclusive story of 20th and 21st century art and his vision for the next chapter at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). In order to conceptualize his role in the “new” MoMA, Nzewi will revisit the history of MoMA and African art, beginning with the African Negro Art exhibition organized by James Johnson Sweeney in 1935, the acquisition of modern works by pioneer African modernists such as Ibrahim El-Salahi in mid-century, to the recent transformative gift of 45 works by the French-Italian collector Jean Pigozzi. He will also discuss his exhibition and collecting strategies.

Nzewi was formerly curator of African art at the Cleveland Museum of Art as well as at Dartmouth College’s Hood Museum of Art in Hanover, NH. Nzewi holds a Ph.D. in art history from Emory University; a postgraduate diploma in museum and heritage studies from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa; and a bachelor’s in fine and applied arts from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. As an artist, he has participated in international artists’ residencies and workshops in Africa, Europe, and the United States. Nzewi has exhibited internationally and is represented in public and private collections, including the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. and the Newark Museum in New Jersey.
