Impressionist Fantasies: Wild Beautiful Concert

June 18 @ 7:00 pm

Join us for a live-stream concert broadcast from Salem UCC Denver. Song cycles and piano solos by Debussy, Ravel, and other Impressionist composers. Performed by Zoe Spangler (soprano), Chappell Kingsland and Bryan Chuan (piano).

French Impressionism is considered by many to be the most beautiful music ever written, with its focus on colors and emotions, Nature imagery, and evocations of far-off lands. The performers feel it is important to feature music by women and people of color alongside works by more famous composers. In this way, we confront the cultural inequities of the past and share the voices of diverse creators, one concert at a time.

We will hear two complete song cycles, the charming Five Greek Folksongs by Ravel and the incomparably lovely Ariettes oubliées (Forgotten Songs) by Debussy. Both alternate between languidly gorgeous and heart-poundingly brisk songs. Ravel’s devilish whirlwind Scarbo and Debussy’s Estampes (a travelogue evoking Asia, Spain, and France) are two beloved Impressionist masterworks for solo piano. Lesser-known but equally beautiful works by Lili Boulanger and Albert Roussel, plus Chappell Kingsland’s very recent piano duet based on birdsong, round out the program. Finally, this concert will feature the Colorado premiere of two songs by that reclusive genius of Indian and English heritage, Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji.
